1. Background
Faculty of Natural Science (FNS), Savannakhet University was formed in 2014, originally called the Department of Science Foundation with the role of providing learning and teaching services to faculties within the institution and outside such as chemistry, biology, mathematics, statistics, physics, political science and social science. According to the national strategic development plan, particularly educational strategic development plan in Fiscal 2012 – 2015, on 22/12/2012, the preparation meeting for establishing the FNS was officially opened and agreed to assign the preparation committees for it such as steering committee, specific committee and program development committee.
2. Role
FNS plays a role as a secretariat to the Savannakhet University (SKU) to create technicians, researchers and scientists. It is a part of SKU in terms of doing scientific research, conserving and promoting customs and culture, and providing academic services to society.
5. Study programs
FNS runs three bachelor degrees in natural science including biology, chemistry and mathematics.
5.1. Bachelor of Science in Biology (BScB)
BScB is a program that intends to create academics in biology. It provides knowledge about living things, introduction to scientific research, laboratory equipments ant its application, and transferable the knowledge into daily life.
Graduates can work in various careers for different organizations such as teachers at university or colleges, or technical officers at departments or offices such as the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the Department of Science and Technology, or mining projects or being employed in related fields. Besides that, background knowledge and skills will allow graduates to continue their study in a higher level in the future.
5.2. Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (BScCh)
BScCh is a scientific study program that aims to create academics relating to chemical science. This program provides some essential knowledge about theories and practice relating to chemical substances and laboratory practice in order to respond to the social demands in terms of scientific research, and supports learners to extend their knowledge and skills to serve community.
Graduates can work as academic staff in both public and private organizations such as the department of pharmacy, the department of Science and Technology, mining projects, quality control in processing industry. Besides that, background knowledge and skills will allow graduates to continue their study in a higher level in the future.
5.3 Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (BScM)
Bachelor of Science Program in mathematics course aims to build scholars in mathematics who are keen to understand and deal with mathematical theories, principles and applications in daily life. It also aims to generate mathematician in order to respond to the socio-economic development demands at national and regional levels.
Graduates can work in both public and private agencies, domestic and international organizations such as telecommunication companies, banks, and related other organizations. Besides that, background knowledge and skills will allow graduates to continue their study in a higher level in the future.
